The New Rules for Cleaning Your Jewellery

The New Rules for Cleaning Your Jewellery

Like any piece of jewellery, whether it's worth $2, $2000 or $200 000, cleaning and caring for your pieces is incredibly important to maintain it's quality. However, we understand life can get in the way, work happens, school happens, family happens- and caring for your pieces is the last thing you'd think to do. Which is why we're here to give you a friendly on the importance of cleaning your jewellery.

Why do I need to clean my jewellery?

All beautiful fine jewellery needs to be cared for, and your Secrets jewellery is no different. Our diamond simulants require the same care as any other precious stone. Everyday wear can cloud the brilliance of your stones, and dull the lustre of your metals. Anything from dust to soaps, lotions, body acidity and perfumes can all accumulate over time and discolour and tarnish your jewellery.

But it’s also much more than that. While practicing good hand hygiene, you might be wondering if you need to take off your rings and watches in order to properly wash your hands. Also, does sanitiser tarnish your beloved jewellery? And can your rings and other pieces of jewellery spread nasty germs?

Of course, all these questions are perfectly reasonable. To maintain the exquisite quality of our pieces, we strongly recommend that you do take off your jewellery to wash your hands. But more than this, you should also be giving your jewellery a good clean.

How to professionally clean your jewellery at home

At Secrets, we offer an in-store cleaning service for free! Whilst our stores are temporarily closed, we have a range of cleaning products available to purchase online so you can keep your jewellery sanitary and looking like new in the comfort of your own home. Best of all, it only takes a few minutes to clean and maintain the quality of your jewellery!

We offer 100% cotton fibre gold jewellery polishing cloths and silver jewellery polishing cloths for those who like to do their cleaning by hand. Simply use the inner cloth to remove dirt and tarnish, and then buff and polish your metal with the ultrasoft outer cloth.

The alternative is to invest in your very own compact Ultrasonic Jewellery Bath. Our state-of-the-art ultrasonic cleaner features a crystal clear tank with carousel and an instructional booklet.

Just about any metal can be safely cleaned in our Ultrasonic Jewellery Bath, including sterling silver, yellow, white and rose gold. However, we do not recommend placing any rings or bracelets if they contain pearls, tortoiseshell, ivory, and amber.

Cleaning cultured freshwater pearls

These stones are very delicate, so extra care is needed when cleaning. Simply wipe your cultured freshwater pearls with a soft dampened clean cloth. Do not use ammonia or laundry cleaner as it is known to break down the brilliance of your cultured freshwater pearls and other precious stones. This includes alcohol found in hand sanitiser. So, when you need to wash your hands, take off your cultured freshwater pearl pieces.

Cleaning white gold jewellery

As is the standard for all white gold jewellery, it will need to be re-rhodium plated periodically to ensure its beautiful and lustrous finish remains. For this service, Secrets applies a small fee.
